FAYELE RETAINS TITLE AS ODUSANYA SETS NEW ASOJU-OBA CUP RECORD

The 51st edition of the longest running Table Tennis Tournament in Nigeria, the Asoju- Oba Molade Okoya –Thomas Table Tennis Championship, supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission through the Lagos State Table Tennis Association was staged from 25th – 29th November, 2019 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos The championship ended with the winner of the Golden Jubilee Edition, David Fayele, winning the Men’s Single’s back to back by defeating Adeyinka Ahmed.  Fayele of the Nigerian Army come  from 2-0 down to beat Adeyinka 3-11,6-11,11-9,5-11,12-10,11-5,11-6 (4-3). In the Female’s Singles, Bose Odusanya coast to victory after winning her fifth consecutive title, having won the Year 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions. Odusanya continued dominance by beating Anu Anjuwon 12-10,11-4,11-8,12-10 (4-0). Reacting to his victory, Fayele said he was able to turn around the table against and overcome the challenge posed by his opponent with determination and focus “when I discovered that I was losing the game, I had to change my playing style and be more focused, I have this strong feeling that a Civilian cannot defeat a soldier in any Contest”. For Ayodeji Okoya-Thomas, the outcome of this year’s Asoju-oba Cup was encouraging, considering the large turnout of players. “It is always pleasing when you see a final day like this, the intensity of the games, they had a wonderful final and when we see a large turnout, we are always happy. This is the project that we took on about five years ago and we are thankful to God. Every year, the tournament gets better and we hope to continue this.

Dignitaries present at the finals of this year’s 51st Asoju- Oba Molade Okoya –Thomas Table Tennis Championship include the Commissioner of Youth and Social Development who doubled as the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Segun Dawodu, the Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku, Director General Mr. Oluwatoyin Gafaar, Children of the Late Asoju- Oba of Lagos, White Cap Chiefs of Lagos and many important personalities in Government and Business in Lagos State.
